What Has the COVID-19 Pandemic Taught Us about Mindfulness?

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought everyone to a very different place in their lives. While it can be difficult to go through something that requires overhauling our daily structure and habits, we can also look at the year as a time to start anew.

Perhaps this global shutdown is a good time to regroup and reflect on important changes we can make for the future. We can begin by implementing practices that are positive for our overall mental health and general well-being. For instance, we could focus on ourselves and find out what is important to us and what makes us genuinely happy. Practicing mindfulness in our daily lives can contribute to this overall sense of well-being.

What Is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness can be defined as a form of meditation. When you are being mindful, you are being acutely aware of your personal feelings in the moment. You take those feelings in and do not judge or try to interpret them. Breathing techniques and guided imagery can be useful during the practice to make it more effective. All mindfulness activities are designed specifically for stress reduction and total relaxation.

Taking a Natural Approach to Overall Well-being

Being aware of our health has also brought many new ideas to the forefront. Many people have used this opportunity to investigate more natural ways of taking care of themselves from both a supplement and health practices standpoint.

Holistic medicine has become an important part of that journey. With a combination of traditional and alternative medicines, this approach has made people more focused on what makes them feel their best.

Homeopathy, meanwhile, comes from the idea that the body can heal itself through various minerals and plants. Some people are using homeopathic substances to boost their immunity in hopes of remaining healthy during the global crisis.

Staying in Physical and Mental Shape

When the quarantine was put into place, many people had to find other methods of staying in shape. No longer were they able to go to the gym to work out, and going outside presented challenges such as the requirements of masks and social distancing.

Staying inside has led many to the practice of yoga. Not only is this a great exercise for keeping the body in shape, but it is also a very effective stress reducer. Learning to meditate can be part of maintaining your mental health as well. With worries about jobs, money, education, health, and overall isolation from others looming, meditation can be very good for your state of mind.

Resetting Our Schedules and Priorities

Staying inside has taught us a lot about ways to busy ourselves and keep our minds active. While our society has traditionally placed a great deal of value on productivity, the pandemic has forced us to reconsider this. Staying at home has allowed us to see the level of stress and fatigue we were so used to functioning at day-to-day. Routines of working all day and not getting enough sleep were once the standard, but now that we have seen the immunity-boosting benefits of getting proper rest, perhaps we can start making changes to how we look at productivity going forward.

Conclusion

Although terrible in so many ways, the COVID-19 pandemic has given the world a unique opportunity to hit the reset button. Not only have we seen how fragile we are, and how this precious life of ours can be taken away in an instant, but we have also learned the value of taking care of ourselves both mentally and physically, as well as the value of loving and taking care of those around us. Our kids continue to grow older, and we along with them. Taking the time to enjoy the people around us is important. It is good for our souls. So many times we race around trying to gain the fortune that so often eludes us. Looking back on the year, perhaps our values have shifted a little. If that is the case, then we can thank the past year for that.
