What Are Spiritual Vibrations, and How Can You Raise Your Vibrational Frequency?

We’ve all heard the phrase “vibe check?” but did you know that it’s more than just another way to say “how are you?”

These days, people are seeking to become more in tune with their inner consciousness and spiritual awareness. They are rejecting the “mindless life”—a life spent merely going through the motions, never stopping to question what life really means nor trying to ascend to a higher consciousness. In short, more people are interested in the spiritual vibrations they are sending out and receiving.

Keep reading to find out what it means to “vibrate higher” and how you can improve your level of consciousness.

What Is Vibration?

If you do a little research, you will see a myriad of definitions for vibration. That’s not by accident. Vibration is highly personal to each individual, so there’s no precise definition. It might mean spiritual consciousness, the “energy” you put out into the world or receive, or the atmosphere created based on who you’re with, where you are, and what you’re doing. Some people summarize it as the idea that all matter in the universe is made of energy that vibrates. When different energies meet, they may resonate or clash. In this view, everything and everyone—humans, animals, nature, rocks, air, mountains, buildings, and even your morning cup of coffee—is together, vibrating with life.

Often, people speak of “higher” or “lower” frequency vibrations. Higher vibrations are produced by positive feelings like love, compassion, gratitude, awe, friendship, confidence, and empathy. Vibrations at lower frequencies are associated with negative emotions like hate, fear, anger, sadness, or jealousy. The language we often use to describe these feelings reveals this intuitive higher/lower distinction. As humans, we naturally feel buoyant, lifted up, or “on a high” when we experience love, beauty, and companionship. In contrast, negative emotions drag us down.

So how do you raise your vibrational frequency? How do you “vibrate higher”?

First, vibrating higher involves understanding yourself as well as the outside world and working toward being in harmony with both. A person who is on the path to spiritual ascension will begin to question the world around them and become more mindful. What makes you feel good? What makes you feel bad? How have your actions affected others? Are you wallowing in hate, anger, or anxiety? Or do you show love and gratitude?

High vibration, in its simplest form, is about feeling good and actively working toward this state, regardless of the circumstances. To achieve this higher state, you may realize you need to change how you relate to others, and who you associate with. You may find some people, habits, or situations are toxic and drag you down. You may naturally start to eliminate anything from your life that does not make you feel good.

5 Signs That You Are Vibrating at a Higher Level of Consciousness

So, what are the signs that you are raising your vibrational frequency? The process is unique to each person, but here are a few ways to tell if you are vibrating at a higher level:

  • You are changing your habits.

For example, if you are eating poorly or putting harmful substances into your body, you will become more aware that these things do not help you show up as your best self. Habits like excessive exposure to technology, taking drugs, and hanging out with negative people sap your energy and hinder progress. Bad habits or those that do not positively add to your life often fall by the wayside when you decide to vibrate higher.

  • Your good habits influence others.

When you begin to shed the ideas and habits that no longer serve you, you will inevitably show up differently in the world. It is not unusual for family and friends to notice these changes and follow suit. For example, if a friend sees you prioritize your health by exercising, they may be inclined to do the same.

  • You understand that you are responsible for your happiness.

As you become more spiritually conscious, you will start to notice just how much your thoughts influence your reality. The experiences we want most are within our control, and people who vibrate higher understand that their lives can be changed once their thoughts are changed.

  • You are more compassionate.

Vibrating at a higher level not only helps you understand yourself; it also helps you understand others. People with higher vibratory frequencies can sense others’ pain, joy, and other emotions, and respond with kindness and sympathy.

  • You love yourself more.

Understanding how vibration impacts your reality will typically translate into treating yourself with kindness. You will begin to focus on improving your life, eliminating negative self-talk, and seeking out more of what makes you feel good.

What Can You Do to Raise Your Vibration?

Now that you understand the general meaning of vibrating higher and what it looks like in practice, you may be wondering what you can do to raise your vibration level. A good place to start is to examine your habits and observe how these habits make you feel. For example, if your space is not tidy, take note of how you feel when you have to work in a cluttered space. For someone who does not enjoy cleaning but enjoys having an organized space, this might mean shifting your mindset about cleaning. If you begin to see cleaning as an act of self-care that will help you feel more productive, you will gradually release the habit of being untidy.

Keeping a clean environment is just one example, but the process can be used for nearly any habit you have developed over the years. From eating better to changing how you relate to your friends and family, our habits shape our reality. Take some time to evaluate your current state of being and ask yourself, “How would I like to feel?” To raise your vibrational frequency, start with the basics of getting more sleep, making an effort to eat healthfully, listening to the physical signs your body sends you, and being mindful of your emotions.
